Types of Actuators
The classification of actuators depends on different kinds of energy sources that are used in controlling the system. The actuator motor is typically controlled by a given source of energy that can be electric, Hydraulic fluid pressure or pneumatic pressure. The control system can be a fixed mechanical or electronic system or controlled by specific software.
Manual Actuators
Principally, the manual actuator employs the gears, levers, chains, pulleys or wheel to aid the movement. It functions by changing rotary movements to linear motion to execute the movement. An automatic manual actuator has an external power source which provides the force required to operate a valve remotely or automatically. If the valves are located in adverse environments, they can stop the manual operation, therefore, the need for power to take over by shutting down the valves in case of an emergency.
Hydraulic and Pneumatic Actuators
Hydraulic actuator uses hydraulic power to facilitate its mechanical operation. The fluid pressure acts on the pistons providing them with thrust in a linear motion that acts on the valves. A trust can be converted to rotary motion to operate the quarter turns. If the fluid pressure is applied on one side of the piston, the pistons move in only one direction referred to as single acting. The Pneumatic actuator, on the other hand, uses sufficient air or gases that provide the thrust to allow rotary movements or linear movements. Very large forces are generated by relatively small pressures. The forces generated are used to move diaphragms affecting the flow of liquids in the valves.
Electric Actuators
The mini 12v linear actuator has a motor drive which provides torque used in the operation of the valves. It converts electrical energy to mechanical energy. Electrical actuators are frequently used to multi-turn valves such as the globe valves or gate. With the addition of quarter-turn gearbox, they can utilize plugs, ball or quarter turn valves. Electric actuators are the most available and the cleanest types of actuators available.
