Homemade Apple Pie

Ingredients
  • 6 cups peeled and thinly sliced Granny Smith apples
  • ½ cup sugar
  • ½ cup packed brown sugar
  • 3 Tbls. all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp. ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • Double-crust pie pastry (9 inches)
  • 1 Tbls. butter
  • Sugar for sprinkling
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Peel and thinly slice apples.
  3. Using a small bowl, combine the sugars, flour, cinnamon and nutmeg. Set aside.
  4. Add the apple slices into a large bowl and sprinkle the lemon juice on top.
  5. Stir and combine well.
  6. Add sugar mixture and toss to coat.
  7. Line the bottom of a 9 or 9½-inch pie plate with one of the pie pastries.
  8. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared pie plate.
  9. Dot the mixture with pieces of the butter.
  10. Add the remaining pastry to the top of the filled pie crust.
  11. Tuck the edges and seal and flute edges. Cut 4 - 1-inch slits in the top of the pastry.
  12. Sprinkle with a pinch of sugar.
  13. Place foil around the edges of the pie crust.
  14. Bake at 350° for 25 minutes and then remove foil.
  15. Bake approximately 25-30 minutes longer, or until crust is golden brown.
  16. Cool on a wire baking rack.
  17. NOTES: Wait until cool and set to cut for serving.
