August 23rd marked the 10 year anniversary of the most devastating hurricane to his the United States, Hurricane Katrina. Hurricane Katrina killed nearly 2,000 people, left 600,000 pets deceased or homeless. Almost half (44%) of the people who refused to evacuate during Hurricane Katrina said they did so because they felt they could not bring their animals with them. Despite this tragedy, recent poll shows that 35% of pet owners still don’t have plans in place for the next big storm.Pledge to PrepareAre you ready for the unexpected?  While you can never be completely ready, you can take steps to prepare for a natural disaster for you and your pets.  I am encouraging pet owners to pledge to prepare for their pets in the event of a natural disaster.  This informative infographic gives you simple steps that can save lives in the event of an emergency.aspca pet disaster infographicSeptember is also National Preparedness Month and is the perfect time to prepare for a natural disaster for you and your pets.  To help, the ASPCA is sponsoring a fantastic giveaway for one lucky reader to win fabulous prizes including:

  • I pledged under Nicole Bear. The recent hurricanes passing by our Hawaiian islands have got me prepping. Unfortunately, the shelters near us don’t take pets, so our dog would have to sleep in the car (we would probably stay with her too). The ones that do are on the other side of the island, which would be impossible to reach during an emergency.

  • I pledge because I love my furry family.

  • I pledge with these words from my heart! I feed my pets before I feed myself! My pets will never be left behind!!! I have two pet carriers, in case of fire!

  • My Oreo and Stripey would MEOWY love me to win this!

  • I pledged

  • I pledged.

  • This is a fabulous giveaway and a great cause to get people involved in. I took the pledge because I have 6 four legged babies at home. 3 are my children and 3 are my grandchildren. A mother/grandmother’s work is never done.

  • I pledged
