In a world that has become so connected, is blows my mind to think that little ones born in the last several years won’t know what it is like living before the internet. I remember the days of card catalog searching in the library in school. Times sure have changed and evolved. When I was a kid, my parents always taught me about “Stranger, Danger”, and I have done the same with mine, but the internet has brought about a new and easier way for potential danger to enter our own homes and our schools.

Most schools nowadays, our included, have transitioned to bookless learning and utilizing laptops and tablets to teach and provide resources. That is why today, more than ever, it is important to teach kids Internet Safety. I love that Willow and Jaxon are internet conscience and savvy at such a young age, but they also need to know the importance of staying safe both off and online.

Today is Safer Internet Day (SID) and I am excited to share some helpful tips and bits of information to help other parents educated their little ones on internet safety. Today, parents and educators nationwide are sharing in the slogan, Together for a better internet“. This is a call to action for all everyong to join together and play their part in creating a better internet for everyone, most particularly, kids.

Be Internet Smart

The internet is like a digital blueprint. Educate and remind your kids that once something by or about anyone is online like a photo, comment, or message, it could stay online forever. Never share personal information like residence, email address, phone number or passwords (so important)!

Be Internet Strong

Protecting your personal information (PII) and identity is important. Choosing strong passwords with several characters (in upper and lower case), numbers and symbols reduces the risk of being hacked. Passwords should be changed often to keep your information secured and fresh.

Be Internet Alert

Never, ever, ever, ever click on an unknown link or link that you are unsure about. You can always right-click and inspect the element for full URL info. Be sure to check email addresses to assure you know where the email came from (does it look legit?). Don’t fall for the scams that so many people click on without hesitation just because it may have come from someone they know. Email addresses can hacked 24/7. Clicking links can lead to compromising of your personal data, malware and other unwanted software on your device.

Be Internet Kind

Teach kids that being kind in and outside of the internet is important. Encourage them that internet courage is not kind and don’t say anything online that they wouldn’t or shouldn’t say offline. Encourage them to let you know when they see something that needs further intervention or help.

Be Internet Brave

Teach your kids that if the see something, say something. Don’t be afraid to speak up and out against online bullying, inappropriate content or asking for help. If it looks to good to be true, it probably is.Come Together for a Better Internet with your family by using Be Internet Awesome starting with the program’s NEW Family Guide and then encourage your kids to put their skills to the test with Interland at g.co/Interland

They are worse than my kids were playing Pac-Man or King Kong on Atari! Of course, their beepers kept going off and I always provided them with change so they could call me. Nowadays the world has gotten a lot smaller! That really scares me! We have to watch their backs! Some kids can easily be tacked by smooth talkers!! Especially ones that bribe them with goodies and more! I remember the stranger danger term. I have warned them about him myself! I have looked into some of the Internet apps myself to help safeguard the URLs that they are on. I know my grandkids Love YouTube videos. I have time limits and I do shoo them out of the house when I can. The same goes for their TV times. Right now it is Arctic weather here, but I’ve given them Board games to play with. I pinned your article under Safety Tips, because adults could always use these tips to help keep their loved ones safe! I have also had my grandkids watch the news with me so they can observe what has happened to others and it’s not pretty!! Plus I have always told them to NEVER give out their personal information! No names, phone numbers, addresses, nothing! And to always tell an adult or one of us, if something is/was wrong! Stranger Danger has not gone away!!

But, now all of our electronic devices are password protected so that they are limited to where they can go, what they can view and how long they can be there. Their parents do most of the Safety discussion, along with their schools. I just make sure that I am following the same guidelines so they aren’t getting mixed signals. I don’t have kids, so I can’t really say a whole lot on the subject. Other than i remember when I was a kid… I was always smart about the internet. Didn’t get into the things that I shouldn’t. Things have changed since the 90’s. LOL. I think being internet smart is very important… regardless of your age.
