Some of the Common Myths about Titanium Jewelry Addressed
Titanium is a very popular material for jewelry nowadays. However, it hasn’t been used for jewelry for a long time, and this has led to a number of myths surfacing. Let’s take a look at some of these myths.
Myth 1 – You Cannot Resize Titanium
When you purchase titanium rings, no soldering or mold is used in their creation. Rather, a pure block of titanium is used in order to mill them. Because they are a solid piece, they will maintain their design, color and size forever and they are incredibly durable. A good artisan should be able to make a titanium ring larger, however. They do this by changing the interior of the ring itself. It is much more difficult, if not impossible, to make the ring smaller, however. This is why it is so important that you get the right size when shopping for titanium rings.
Myth 2 – You Cannot Cut off a Titanium Ring
Nonsense! Titanium rings can be cut as easily as any other metal. You can check this with any A&E department you like. People are told they cannot cut titanium because it is such a strong metal. Sometimes, this is told by jewelers, who simply lack the skill to work with titanium and prefer it if their customers buy gold instead. The reality is that you don’t have to worry about this at all. If your ring is stuck, however, don’t cut it straight away. Rather:
- Put your finger in water that is as cold as you can cope with for five minutes, which will help to shrink it to the smallest possible size.
- Put some lubricant on the ring, such as hand lotion, olive oil or your detergent, which will make it slippery.
- Twirl the ring very slowly while pulling it off.
Myth 3 – You Cannot Engrave a Titanium Ring
Another absolute legend. All titanium can be engraved with names, dates, phrases or anything else you would like.
Myth 4 – Titanium Isn’t Safe
This is perhaps the most bizarre of all myths. The reality is that it is actually safer than any other material. It is 100% hypoallergenic, unlike rings that are marketed as being gold. Almost all gold rings are alloyed with other metals in order to make it harder (gold is very soft), and the likelihood of being allergic is very high. Titanium does not, in any way, react to human skin. In fact, it doesn’t react with anything at all. It is for this reason that the metal is popular not just in rings, but also hip replacements, space shuttle parts and sea water intake valves.
If you want a ring, therefore, that is absolutely beautiful and can instantly become a family heirloom that will last for generations, titanium is the way to go. It is stunning, very modern and can be customized to your personal taste, so that you have something truly unique and that is ‘just you’.
