Being environmentally conscious doesn’t always mean a big investment of your energy. Banish thoughts of making drastic changes in your day-to-day! Lazy as it may sound; sometimes you don’t even have to leave your couch to start saving the world thanks to the tips from Wearetop10.com.
Since the little things add up, you don’t have to look past your living room. If you’re watching TV or using the computer, turn off the overhead lights and let the screen keep things bright for you. Use power strips, too – the flip of a switch means that your electronics won’t drain power when they’re not in use.

You can make changes from your smartphone, too. Switching to paperless billing cuts costs and saves trees; keeping notes on your phone or tablet instead of in a notebook saves paper and production costs, and reduces waste. Don’t forget the power of social media, either! Encouraging friends and family to join you in making little changes will really add up.

Ready to look to the rest of your home? In the bathroom, you can save water by taking showers instead of baths (just keep your shower time under ten minutes). Save energy by air-drying, too, whether it’s your hair or your clothes. A one-time investment in a hanging rack will add up when you’re running your dryer less every year.

In the kitchen, try using less meat – poultry and fish included. Animals use up a lot more water and resources to raise and maintain than plants! There are plenty of tasty options available for plant proteins, too. When you’re done eating, try composting your food scraps to create home-grown fertilizer for your garden. What you can’t compost, recycle! Swap out those light bulbs for energy efficient ones while you’re at it.

If you’re out and about, look at your transportation. Is your car in good repair? Maintaining it means it’s running optimally, using less fuel, and polluting less. Working close to home, or near a bus line? Try walking, biking, or using public transportation instead. Don’t feel like you have to skimp out on your daily coffee or water, either – grab a reusable travel mug and water bottle, and keep them in your car so you don’t have to change up your routine.

Your grocery trips can save the environment, too. Shopping locally means supporting local businesses, local jobs, and reducing transportation costs. Getting reusable bags cuts down on plastic waste and saves paying for paper ones. Planning out what you need beforehand means you don’t get things you don’t need, which means reduced waste. If you still happen to have extra pantry items left over afterwards, look into donating it instead of throwing it out!

Ready to make the biggest lazy changes you can to save the environment? Look to your workplace. It’s a team effort, here – everything from simply lowering the thermostat a few degrees to encouraging your supervisors to look into recycling programs can make a huge difference.

Don’t forget the power of sharing, either. Set up a snack exchange program to encourage people to avoid just tossing what they don’t need. A community bulletin board is great for swapping services, buying and selling gently used appliances and furniture, and keeping people in-the-know about local programs coming up. Don’t forget that you can share resources, too, be it books or documents. Any way you can cut down on paper usage or buying brand-new items will have an impact.

  • Please DON’T sit in a dark room using a computer or phone screen! It is very bad for your eyes and for a lot of people the source of major headaches. A better solution might be to switch your lighting to an LED bulb.
