The term talent management is anything but another HR buzzword. It actually is a term that represents and reflects the attitude of your entire organization towards your employees. Think about some big brands that use special terms to refer to their employees. Disney and Cineplex call their employees cast members, for example. You probably suddenly have a slight change in attitude towards how those companies think of their workers. The same principle applies when you refer to your hiring practices as talent management. The way your organization thinks about the team can affect how they hit goals and accomplish tasks. What exactly is talent management?

You may have a vague understanding that talent management refers to how the hiring process is carried out, but it encompasses more than just the act of hiring a new employee. When you pick it apart, talent management is actually the entire commitment to finding, attracting, recruiting, hiring, retaining, and developing the most talented and generally best employees on the market. It accounts for every process, from the job posting and the actual hiring to offering training courses and honing new and old skills, so you can build and retain a strong workforce.

Why is talent management essential?

The hiring of employees and the management of people is absolutely critical for any organization. Good employees who are productive and produce high-quality work earn the company money through sales and happy clients and customers. Poor employees who are inefficient or unqualified cost the company time, money and reputation. Organizations should prioritize the processes that focus on better engagement, productivity and performance from their team in order to avoid a bad employee situation.

It takes more than just acknowledging talent management is important; organizations need to actively work to embrace the idea and improve all related practices.

How can you improve your talent management process?

Ideally, you want to make sure every process is operating as efficiently as possible with good structure and organization. This makes it easier for your HR team to focus their efforts on the actual talent and finding ways to best ensure they’re growing, adapting and improving their skills over time, rather than getting bogged down by tedious processes and paperwork.

You can streamline and automate parts of the processes, like the employee paperwork and sorting through resumes to find qualified applicants. HR software programs like XCD take care of recruitment and onboarding processes, performance reviews, and scheduling and managing training programs, as well as other corehr duties.

You can also revisit your employee benefits package to see if you can improve it in some ways. You don’t necessarily need to spend a lot of money to make it a more attractive benefits package—offering workplace flexibility like remote work and flexible hours is a huge draw when it comes to recruitment and retaining talent.

Finally, ensure that there are plenty of growth opportunities in your company to reduce turnover. There should be good communication about internal growth opportunities, so your employees know about them. Additionally, you should strive to create a learning environment in your office so your employees can develop their skills, stay up-to-date with best practices, and better themselves as workers.
