Christmas is full of nostalgia- when the festive season rolls around, chances are you relive that magic you felt each year when you were young. So as an adult, it’s only natural that you want to do the same for your own kids and give them that same special feeling of enchanted excitement. But thinking of activities to start might have you scratching your head, it’s important to come up with ideas that work for your family and your budget so it can take some trial and error. Here are a few different options you could consider, these can be done at different price points so are adaptable and most of all- fun!

Festive boxes

Festive boxes are great for kids and adults alike. Fill them with Christmassy treats based on what the person likes- chocolate, tasty drinks, fluffy socks and pyjamas, activities and fun novelties. You could hand out the boxes on the 1st of December to welcome the festive season with a bang. You could hand them out mid-month as an alternative to traditional advent gifts, or as a treat when your children finish school for the Christmas break. You could give them on Christmas eve as a way to get everyone geared up for the big day, this has become a popular tradition in recent years. However you decide to do it, festive boxes can be a really fun way to bring a little extra joy to your family at Christmas and a nice tradition to build together. They don’t have to be expensive, things like Chrstmas books can be reused every year and you could fill them with home baked and thrifted items if you’re on a budget.

Travel

Travel at Christmas can be a magical experience. It could be anything from jumping on a plane, to getting in the car or catching a coach to the next city over to where you live. But making a journey together to go and do something fun will mean the chance to make memories. You could go and visit a Christmas market, or go and visit a place that you know will have impressive festive lights. Bundle up and walk around together, take in the atmosphere and generally enjoy the magic, it’s something you can do on just about any budget. One thing to be aware of if you are travelling around Christmas time is to make sure your home is well protected since unfortunately it’s a time when home burglaries are increased. Double check doors and windows are locked, and if you have smart bulbs at home you can turn lights on and off to make it look like someone is home. Faraday bags block signals like Bluetooth, GPS, WiFi and cell so can be useful for keeping your car keys in if you’re travelling and leaving your car at home. Don’t let it put you off going away in December since it’s a fantastic family tradition, but it’s just something to be aware of.

Christmas party

A Christmas party at home can be a wonderful way to celebrate the season and create wonderful festive memories. It could be as simple or elaborate as you’d like. From an easy tea party and some Christmas games with the people in your household, to a full buffet, music and entertainment for all of your extended family and friends. Consider your budget and go from there, if you don’t have a lot to spend there are plenty of fun, free ideas for Christmas party entertainment online that you could print or make yourself. If you want to have a bigger party but don’t have a massive food budget, go potluck style. Ask everyone to bring a dish, most people have an excess of food at this time of year so are happy to bring something along. Then you can all share and there’s no huge cost on one person or family. Youtube has a ton of free Christmas playlists that add to the atmosphere too.

Festive baking

Festive baking is a simple way to spend time with your kids, and they tend to enjoy it as there’s a tangible and delicious product to show for it at the end. Whether you’re a pro at baking or a total beginner there are loads of fun projects you could try. Simple shortbread cut and iced as Christmas trees for example is something that just about anyone could do. If you’re more into the decorating than baking element, purchase a cheap store-bought cake, cupcakes or biscuits and have fun with piping bags, icing pens and pens with edible ink to make them look great.
