Helping Middle Schoolers Explore Their Inner Talents with Dex by Sheri Lynn Fishbach
Do you have a little executive chef in the making? Kids are curious and love to create, explore and do all kids of new and different things, including cooking in the kitchen. When my kids were little, they would follow me all around the kitchen as I would bake and prepare various meals.
I love that many generations of my family, both men and women, have had a passion for cooking over the decades and mine are no exception to this. I have happened upon this amazing book by Sheri Lynn Fishbach called DEX. This book is perfect for Jeffery, as he has just entered middle school this year. The book is in essence about a middle school kid name Dex Rossi, who has a passion for cooking.
The book tells us how Dex, an awkward middle-schooler, has a creative mind and turns it into a lucrative gourmet lunch stand right in his very own front yard. It even has a great little love plot that makes it more interesting and enjoyable. Jeffery cracked open the book immediately after it arrived. What he loved most is that it is very relatable to him and kids his age and shows that anyone can do something they love when they put their creative minds to it.
While we won’t share the full details of the book with you, it is a great story and perfect for kids around Jeffery’s age (11), who are entering that awkward phase of middle school where their hormones are changing and racing and they transition from kids to young adults-to-be.
Be sure to check back with us as we have Jeffery create his own “Dex inspired” recipe and share it right here on the blog! You can always purchase this great book for your kids on Amazon.
Do you have a middle-schooler? Tell me some fun, interesting stories they have from school…do they love to cook? What creative ways to they try to earn money?

It’s so important to get our children to explore their talents! It really can have a huge impact on their self-esteem! My middle schooler loves cooking and it’s really helped her with her self confidence because she is starting to see just how creative and wonderful she is! So I couldn’t agree more, we have to encourage them to explore!
