Here Are 3 Big Things You Can Accomplish in Just One Year
The most common excuse people give for not doing big things is that they simply don’t have the time. We can all empathize, as we are all too busy to pile even more things on our plate. Time is a limited commodity. You only get 24 hours in a day. You need to sleep for a third of that. You have to work for at least another third of the time. Then, there are family obligations. There is not a lot left over for other adventures, especially big ones.
Even so, we manage to find time for the things we really care about. Some people find time to go drinking with their buddies after work. Some find time to play hours of video games or watch hours of TV. Still others eke out the time for hiking, biking, swimming, camping, and other outdoor activities. Time is a limited quantity that nobody has until they need to find it for something that really excites them. If you want to do something great in the next 12 months, you have the time. What you might not have is a clue about what great things you can do in that short length of time. Here are three.
Become a Nurse
Everyone knows it takes more than a year to become a nurse — Everyone, that is, except for those who got their ABSN online in about a year. An accelerated Bachelor’s of Science degree in nursing can be obtained a lot faster than you think. And the need for nurses is greater than ever. These days, a good nurse can demand top dollar. That is just a side benefit. Few people go into nursing for the money. They do it because it is meaningful work that saves the world, one patient at a time.
You would be surprised at how many accelerated degree programs you can find. It is not just nursing. It is even easier if you already have some college credits. You should also know that college credits are not the only thing transferable. You can use your life experience and work experience to help jumpstart your degree. Many universities will give you credit for that experience and reduce the time it takes for you to complete your degree. Even if you manage to get an Associate’s degree in a year, you are well ahead of the game.
Start a Business
You would be surprised at how little time it takes to start a business. The longest part of the process is devising a solid business plan that will get you the financing you need to get that business up and running smoothly. You have to decide if you will do that business completely online, or if there will be a storefront component. Even if you do the business online, you still have to consider physical location. Will you be running it out of your home? Where in your home will you set up shop? A small corner of the kitchen table is probably not going to cut it.
You might need to rent office space even if you have no retail component and no employees. You are also going to need some money. Even if you are doing something as simple as an ad-supported blog, you are going to need some marketing capital for getting the word out as broadly as possible. It might take you as much as a year to get all these details worked out. But it shouldn’t take you more than a year from concept to grand opening.
Write an App
You don’t have to be a comp-sci grad to write a smartphone or iPad app that will make you money. Apple says you can soon build apps directly on the iPad and put them into the App Store from there. This update to Swift Playgrounds will come later this year. That means that you will not have to be a veteran coder to put a functional app together and become immortalized as an app developer. It might not be as easy as snapping your fingers. But it is definitely something you should be able to do in less than a year.
You can become a nurse, start a business, or develop an app in a lot less time than you think. In a year’s time, if you really put your mind to it, you could do all three.
These are definitely good ideas! I have never thought about doing any of these things, but it’s awesome that you can get them done in just a year.
