Every child needs role models they can look up to and who will impact their lives positively. Foster children require them because they may not have had someone to look up to or learn from in the past. If you are a foster carer wondering how to be a great role model to your foster children, here are some tips that can help.

Be Consistent

Words and actions matter, and this is a lesson you should be teaching children in care. If you are consistent in what you say and do by following up, keeping promises, and generally being a good person, the children under your care will learn from this behaviour and emulate it.

Practice Self-control

Emotional releases are healthy and can reduce stress. However, how you go about doing it is just as important, as it can affect your foster children in significant ways. Learn to practice self-control in front of your children or learn from the professionals at fcascotland.co.uk about how to release your emotions in healthy ways.

Embrace Self-improvement

We should always be seeking opportunities to improve ourselves and our lives. Different situations might affect us at the moment, but we should not let them dictate our lives and pull us down. We should use them as learning experiences and opportunities to improve ourselves and our lives.

Self-improvement also requires that we put ourselves in different situations so we can learn something new. Doing so teaches foster children that they should be seeking such opportunities and that learning and growing never stop.

Improve Relationships with Those Around You

We all have crucial relationships with friends and loved ones, but not all of them are great. You may have issues with different people that make interacting or maintaining a positive relationship with them difficult. Instead of holding on to these negative emotions, learn to forgive and let things go.

It is better to practice being in the right relationships than being right all the time. Repairing these relationships can show your foster children how to handle sour relationships in their own lives. It also shows them there are opportunities to better themselves when they do so.

Mending them also shows that you know how to take personal responsibility for what you may have done and what has happened. It teaches them the value of doing so and why it is better than holding onto things that have already happened and that they cannot change.

Serve or Volunteer

Volunteering is one of the best ways to give back and help families in need. Even though you are already helping another family by being a foster carer, there are additional opportunities to serve in your area in exchange for your time.

Doing so helps build a stronger family and community, enhances teamwork, and teaches children in care the value of serving others. It also allows them to see things from a different perspective so they can appreciate however much they have.

Positive role models play a crucial role and make a difference in the lives of foster children. They also provide the support they need to thrive emotionally and be the best versions of themselves.
