You have made the decision to decorate your child’s bedroom, but feel completely overwhelmed. Don’t worry, there are plenty of ways to decorate their room without having to spend a fortune. One important thing to remember is that by decorating your child’s room it will not only bring you closer together, but will provide a happy and exciting place for them to grow up and make memories in.

Choose a Theme

Talk to your child about what they want in their room. There are so many choices to make when it comes to furnishing your room, however there are many ways to do it on a lower budget without having to go out and buy any new furniture. Ask your child what they like in terms of colours and be sure to gently guide them to make sure the choice of theme is both fun and practical.

Paint and Decoration

One of the easiest ways to save money when decorating a child’s bedroom is on the paint. Wallpaper can be very expensive, especially if your child likes a certain cartoon character or theme. If you are an artistic person you could sketch characters and animals on the wall. If you are not so artistic consider painting the entire room a plain colour and getting some wall stickers from your local store or online to place on the walls. One fun thing to do with children is to let them draw on the walls before you paint, this is fun and you can take photos while they are doing this to hang on the walls after you have finished.

Another way to save money is to consider painting only one wall. This can look very effective and make a huge difference to the way the room looks. Try painting the wall behind the bed head to give a great accent to the room. Opt for plain colours because you may often have to change the theme over in a few years. Luckily children tend to choose the same types of colour schemes. For example boys love football, space, and cars which can all be represented in blues, greens, and reds. Girls love princesses, ponies, and make up which can be done in baby pinks and purples.

Bed Linen

Choosing a new bedspread and sheets can make an amazing difference in a bedroom for a small cost. If your child wants their room in a certain theme then this is a great way to incorporate their favourite character without spending too much money. For example, if they want a Toy Story themed room you can easily find Disney duvet cover sets online. Sit at the computer with your child together and have a look at designs or take them shopping with you. They will love to feel in control of their room and enjoy choosing something together.

Flooring

You don’t have to invest in a new carpet every time you decorate a room. One of the cheapest options is to pull the carpet up completely and paint the wood on the floor. Kids will make endless mess on carpets so not only is this practical, but will end up saving you a lot of cleaning. You can pick up some small rugs for great prices which work well to give the room a unique and fun feel.

The most important thing to remember when decorating your child’s room on a budget is allow them to express themselves. Your child is developing and has ideas about what they like. They will be spending a lot of years in their bedrooms so make sure it represents them and carefully guide them in the right direction. Most importantly have fun and enjoy the process.
