How to Get Better Memory on Your Computer
Improving your laptop’s memory is important if you are working from home or you are working on the move. You need to get the most out of your computer’s memory, so we’re going to talk you through some of the ways that you can improve the memory on your current computer.
The more RAM your machine has, the more tasks it can perform simultaneously for you. You may already like upgrading your laptop with a DDR4 for PC, but improving your RAM is going to help you massively with your computer’s ability to keep up. RAM – or random access memory – is going to be responsible for handling the active processes on your computer. The more your machine has, the more it can do. So, how do you get better memory on your computer?
- Restart the computer. A good way to get better memory for your computer is to get it restarted.I like your computer’s hard drive. Everything stored in the RAM is cleared out every time your computer restarts. If your program starts running slowly, a reboot can really help to clear that memory and smooth things out.
- Stop running too many programs and processes. Did you know that on Windows you can see exactly how much RAM every program is using just from using the Task Manager? Just go to the Processes tab, select the memory header to sort processes by RAM usage and you’ll be able to see which ones you can quit. You can check memory use in the Activity Monitor to make sure that you’re quitting the right apps and processes that are draining your memory and not doing anything for you.
- Clean up those background apps. If you’re using Windows currently, there could be apps running in the background that you don’t know that are taking up most of your memory. Just check out The Settings, Privacy, and Background apps to control which apps are continuing to run when you don’t want them to be.
- Close any Finder windows on a Mac. Every single one of your apps and files that you have on your desktop are loaded onto your RAM. If your desktop is constantly cluttered with any icons, you can delete these and move them to a folder. Each one of those Finder windows loads its contents into the RAM too, so if you’re sitting with windows open. Then you should close them down.
- Disable any startup programs. If there are any unnecessary startup programs that are running the secondary log into your computer. It’s time to disable those and prevent them from running when you turn the computer on. If you’re not using any of these particular apps on a daily basis, you don’t need to have them using up your RAM unnecessarily.
Improving your computer’s RAM can make a big difference to how much you can use on your PC. Whether you have a Windows or a Mac, you need to consider exactly what it means for you to have better memory.
