How to Sell Your Car Privately

If you want to get the most money from selling your car, then selling it privately rather than via a dealer can be a good idea. That being said, it can be difficult to find a good buyer who is willing to pay a fair price.

If you haven’t sold a car privately before or you have, but it did not go well, then the below guide is just what you need.

Step 1: Check your car

Before you start trying to sell your car, you need to make sure that it is in good working order. Ideally, you should book it in for a full service to ensure it is structurally sound and that all the main components are working as they should be.

If you think your car may have some issues, it can be a good idea to book it in for a test as this can help you to attract more buyers and command a higher price. You may also now need to find out how to transfer a registration if you want to keep the same personalized number plate.

Step 2: Clean your car

You may be surprised at just how much more interest you will get if you take the time to properly clean your car before you list it for sale. Make sure that you clean the exterior and the interior of the vehicle. If you are not confident in your car-cleaning abilities, pay a professional to do the job for you.

Step 3: Advertise your car

Now that your car is looking its best, the next step is to advertise it for sale. You can advertise your car for sale in many different places, such as on social media selling sites and via websites such as Gumtree and Autotrader.

It is worth noting that some websites command a fee for listing an item for sale, so make sure you consider this.

Step 4: Arrange viewings

Most potential buyers will want to arrange a viewing of your vehicle before committing to a sale. Many people choose to bring someone with them to view a car so that they can get a second opinion.

During viewings, ensure you are as helpful as possible and have any relevant paperwork to hand.

Step 5: Negotiate a price

The part of selling a car privately that people struggle with the most is the next step: agreeing on a price. You should have an idea of the price you would like to get before you arrange viewings and a minimum price that won’t go below.

Be prepared for buyers to offer very low prices but remember you don’t have to accept them. Everyone loves a bargain and will try their luck.

Step 6: Complete the sale

Once you agree on a price that both parties are happy with, it is time to complete the sale and take care of the handover. Make sure that you give the buyer a receipt containing all the relevant information, such as the make and model of the car, its registration number, and the paid amount.
