Celebrate Valentines Day with the Peanuts Gang and Win a Valentines Prize Pack
This Valentines Day, Fall in Love with Snoopy and the entire Peanut’s Gang – All over again!
Charles Schulz has brought the amazing joy of the entire Peanuts Gang into our homes and hearts for decades. My personal love of them started early on when I was a child and has they remain in my home and my heart to this day. Each holiday, I adorn my home in some way with an adorable Peanuts themed decoration.
My passion first started when I was a kid, reading the Sunday comic strips and Snoopy, Charlie Brown and all of the gang were always on the front page.
Many of the infamous Valentine’s Day comic strips revolve around Charlie Brown’s eagerness to receive valentines…only to be disappointed, every. single. time. In several of the strips, Charlie Brown watches forlornly as Snoopy sits atop his doghouse reading his stacks of valentines—while his own mailbox remains doggedly empty.
While other times, Charlie Brown’s stomach is in knots as he focuses on getting a valentine from the Little Red-Haired Girl or giving one to her, but he never quite manages to get up the nerve to approach her.
Interesting fact about the Little Red-Haired Girl – she was actually a co-worker of Charles Schulz’ named Donna Johnson Wold. They eventually became involved and dated for several years, but in 1950, when Schulz proposed to her, she turned him down stating she was already engaged to someone else. They did; however, remain life-long friends after that.
My personal favorite is the not-so-mutual love between Sally and Linus. Sally always refers to Linus as her “Sweet Babboo” and was noted in several strips, most particularly Valentine’s Day.
While the comics brought joy and laughter to me each week, I most particularly excited when the holiday specials would come on TV. This was the day before DVD, internet and even the VCR for me. We didn’t even have cable until I was 13 (I know, some don’t still have cable to this day, but for us, it was a special opportunity.)
Peanuts offers two primetime specials devoted specifically to Valentine’s Day, Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown & A Charlie Brown Valentine.
In A Charlie Brown Valentine, Charlie Brown attempts to win the heart of the Little Red-Haired Girl. After numerous failed efforts, he finally works up the courage to call her to ask her to the Valentine’s Day dance. But he dials the wrong number and reaches Peppermint Patty instead.
At the party, Charlie Brown tries to dance with the Little Red-Haired Girl, but then realizes she is already dancing with Snoopy. At the end of the day, Charlie Brown is upset that he didn’t get to dance with the Little Red-Haired Girl, and didn’t even receive one valentine. Just then, Snoopy brings Charlie Brown a valentine—but the special ends there, and it is not revealed who the valentine is from!
Here are a couple of fun facts about this special:
- A Charlie Brown Valentine is one of the first to depict the Little Red-Haired Girl in full view, though she remains unnamed and does not speak.
- A Charlie Brown Valentine was the first Peanuts special to be produced after Charles Schulz’ death, as well as the first without Schulz on the production team.
This Valentine’s Day offers up some fun, new and innovative gifts that you can give your loved one. Oriental trading is offering some adorable items that are perfect for a class party or church function. My personal favorite are the crafts and stickers.
Another set of great gifts are these fun Pez and a ready-to-read book entitled Happy Valentine’s Day, Charlie Brown, from Simon & Schuster.
As always, I am excited to share a traditional Whitman’s chocolate sampler with my daughter, as she has also become a huge Peanuts fan. Many amazing Peanuts Gang & Snoopy items are going to be available this Valentine’s Day. Be sure to check your local retailers and various online sites to find the perfect gift for your special someone. And don’t forget to pick out that special card from Hallmark.
