Most likely you have a can or two of tuna in your pantry. It makes for quick lunches or additions to salads. When you bought that can of tuna, what criteria did you use to pick that particular can? Do you just choose the cheapest on the shelf? Do you shop by whether it is in water or oil? I used to! I used to take the cheapest, in-water can of tuna without giving a thought to why I should choose the other brands. Tuna is tuna, right? Wrong! Let me tell you about some huge differences and you will never look at those cans of tuna on the grocery shelf again like they are all the same.

Nutrients

You have heard tuna is good for you, but do you know why? Protein and Omega 3’s among other benefits are the most valuable nutrients that come from seafood. How raw and natural the seafood is packed before the cooking process will determine the value of these nutrients. Wild Planet packs their tuna steaks raw before cooking so that the nutrients stay with the product. Wild Planet Albacore Tuna has 32 grams of protein. Compare that to around 25-26 grams in most other brands. They also give you 1,384mg of Omega 3’s compared to 250-700mg on average in other leading brands. This is because Wild Planet only cooks their product once and no added oils or water is used. Even their canned salmon will leave you with as much as 700mg of Omega 3’s and that is far beyond other brands. See what happens when you properly pack seafood? You get to keep all of its nutrients!

How is your tuna caught?

Are you reading your label to see if it is pole or troll caught? I always do. Pole or troll caught is just as the name suggests-this tuna or albacore is caught on a line. There are no wasted fish due to nets or tossed at sorting. When you fish with a pole or fishing line, you get to immediately throw back the ones not right. Pole and troll caught tunas are the recommended way to fish-it is natural and no sea life is wasted. If it does not say it was pole or troll caught (or FAD-free, another way to fish for tuna without sea life wasted) then it was most likely farmed or net-caught. Catching and buying tuna caught with responsible methods is the best for your sea life. You will notice a slight cost difference as pole and troll catching is a slower process, but you really are making a responsible choice. Wild Planet’s products are pole and troll caught. I get my Wild Planet products at my local Safeway and Walmart and most times pay less than $1 more for a much healthier product.

So take a look at each can of tuna on your next shopping trip. Who has better nutrients-high protein and Omega 3’s and less mercury- and who is doing there part to respect our sea life and environment and pole/troll/FAD-free catching their products? When you have a tuna or albacore that is cooked in the method Wild Planet uses keeping all of it’s nutrients, you get a much tastier product. Since I have only been buying Wild Planet, my family notices the better taste of their tuna compared to other brands I used to buy when I only shopped by price.

  • I learned that their tuna are caught individually using poll and troll methods. All of their cans are BPA free.

  • I learned that polling & trolling are on the labels !

  • I learned that they support the conservation of wild marine ecosystems which is fantastic!

  • I didn’t know they also sold shrimp. I have, never tried, canned shrimp, but their processing may make it actually palatable!

  • I learned that this brand is in a few of my local grocery stores. I will definitely be trying out some of these products.

  • Nice company! I leaned all purchases made of tuna products are documented by dolphin safe and certificate of origin certificates. I also learned the goal at Wild Planet Foods is to educate and inspire consumers to make wise choices that will result in immediate health benefits for themselves and their families and a positive, long-term impact on our planet.

  • I learned that Wild Planet products can be found in retail supermarkets, natural supermarkets and specialty / gourmet / natural food stores. I also learned that they cook their Albacore only once, in the can, without any added oil or water. This allows for all of the natural fish oils to stay inside our can unlike conventional brands which remove most of the Omega 3 in their pre-cooking process.
