One of the stops along my journey in LA, I got to watch the first episode of a new series coming out on Disney XD. I also had the chance to meet the creator and talk with him in detail about the show.

From Emmy-Award Winning producer, Ryan Quincy, Disney XD has a new show coming out August 1, 2016 – Future-Worm!Disney XD Future-Worm!

Future-Worm!” is an offbeat comedy adventure that follows Danny (voiced by Andy Milonakis), an optimistic 12-year-old who creates a time machine lunch box and befriends Future- Worm (voiced by James Adomian), a fearless worm from the future with titanium-enforced abs.  Together, the duo embarks on adventures through space and time.

Watching the first episode of Future-Worm! was such a joy. The cartoon was engaging and delightful and loads of laughs. Immediately following the episode preview, we sat down with Ryan Quincy and discussed his show from original creative processes to full episode detail.Ryan Quincy Future-Worm!

After producing South Park for many years, Ryan detailed how he wanted to create a show that his kids could watch and relate too.

I worked in animation for almost 20 years.  A lot of it was in cartoons for adults.  I worked on South Park for about 14 years.  And,I have two kids.  My daughter is eight, and my son is 12.  A lot of times, growing up, they’re like, Dad, we want to see what you’re working on.  Like, ah!  We can’t, no.  We’re not showing any South Park episodes to the kids.

So I always wanted to make a show for my kids, that I could watch with my kids, and that is Future-Worm!  It’s a fun, time travel show, but it’s not a show that is time travel in the sense of going back and seeing who knocked the nose off the Sphinx. It’s a lot of fun, it’s absurd, it’s silly.  It’s the most fun I’ve had in animation.  I love the crew.  I love the cast, and I can’t wait to share this with you guys.

Andy & Future-Worm

Each Future-Worm! episode consists of three cartoons that make up the full half-hour episode. An 11-minute main story and supporting subplot, a 3-minute runner sketch and a 7-minute sitcom style story. Ryan noted that each has a nice variety of adventures and stories to tell, including cameos from renowned astrophysicist, Neil deGrasse-Tyson.

When asked about exploring Future-Worm’s origin, he detailed how a simple worm became the mega traveler and power force he is today:

There were five shorts that we did last summer, 90 second shorts. There, some of the origin is in that.  With the series, we want to just hit the ground running and over the course of the season, there’ll be some callbacks to some of that.  But, basically, what happened was, Danny created this time machine lunchbox, sent it so far into the future that these future scientists found it, opened it up, and some of Danny’s lunch was in there, including an apple that happened to have a worm in it.

They put it through their genetic escalator, and gave him all (of) these attributes   like the bulletproof beard, the photo-receptor visor, and the 24 titanium-enforced abs. So then, they sent Future-Worm back to hang out with Danny.  So, that’s kind of in a nutshell, the origin of how they met.

Want to know the inspiration behind Future-Worm!? Ryan details it very simply:

When I came over to Disney to develop something, I wanted (to) make a show that you always wanted to make.  I always loved time travel, and adventure shows, and I’m good friends with Justin Roiland, who did Rick and Morty, and when we were talking and I said, “yeah, I think I want to do a time travel show.”  He’s said, “well if you’re gonna do that, you know, there’s always the rules you have to deal with.”

Do you, though?…maybe it’s a show that the characters kind of say, “ah, forget the rules”, and just kind of barrel ahead.  That was really sort of the inspiration of doing sort of this self-indulgent time travel, and again, you can see that not every episode is time travel.  There’s other adventures, too.

Future WormWhen asked about who he wanted to voice Danny, he stated that he had just the right person in mind – Andy Milonakis!

Andy was my first choice.  He was my first choice to be this character, do this voice of this character, and he’s fantastic.  He’s amazing.  He does such a great job.  He brings such a great energy to the character, and just, I love Andy.  He’s great.

After meeting with Ryan, we had the chance to sit and talk with some of the animators of the show. Some even came in futuristic costume.Future Worm Kari and Future-Worm!
