You have decided to vacation to a place far away from home, or for work reasons. The first thing that you need to do is to inform your doctors about it. If your doctor asks you to immunize yourself, do this at the earliest when you have ample time before your travel. It is essential to travel abroad as differences in time zones may require you to change the intake of carbohydrates or insulin levels.

Ø  Check the official website of the airlines. Speak to the crew about your medical condition and the medications your doctor has advised you to take. The staff can advise you on the items you can or cannot take with you and suggest alternatives.

  • Generally, you can carry the medicines; however, if you are using pumps or Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM), you may not be allowed to travel with it if the authorities are not pre-informed. The reason being that CGMs are wireless devices that may hamper navigation and aircraft communication.
  • If the need arises, inform your security screener about your medical condition and the item in concern. When you board the flight, inform your flight attendants (and co-passengers) as well. They can help you should an emergency occur during the journey or with a special meal.

Ø  Drugstore – When you buy your medication, check that they have the labels of the original pharmacy on them.

  • If you are buying devices that you’ll need during the journey, e.g., CSM, contact the manufacturers to confirm whether they are prone to dysfunction on being scanned.
  • Buy cool gel packs if needed.
  • Carry double the medicines needed for your travel. There may be unforeseen situations having you postpone your travel plans, e.g., if you contact someone who has been tested Covid positive: a certain problem can delay your work plans, requiring you to go through a period of quarantine or self-isolation first. Therefore, always have your stock in place.

Ø  Pack the medications and medical devices needed during travel in your handbag. You can use different covers or cases for the medicines and label them.

  • If you are traveling alone, carry a medical ID stating your medical condition.

Ø  Make multiple copies of your prescription. Carry one such copy in your wallet, mentioning specifics like – how to manage in case of emergency. Have another note in your wallet with your doctor’s details and other emergency contacts. Save the same on your handset as “Emergency Contact”.

Ø  Carry something light to eat during the flight, e.g., air-fried popcorn, salads, and greens. Pack fruits and juices in case of sugar fall.

Ø  Monitor your blood sugar level regularly and the level of carbohydrates and calories.

Ø  Look for health care centers nearby.

Conclusion

The one last thing that you should be mindful of is choosing your accommodation. Go for one that takes hygiene into strict account. The apartments in San Diego, CA are not only hygienic and follow the COVID- 19 guidelines strictly, but here, you can also cook your meal. That will be a blessing as you get into the process of adjusting to the new climate, saving you from unnecessarily causing health disorders like Food Poisoning. Also, restaurant food is not healthy and high in calories, and given your health condition, it will negatively impact you.

In addition, if you can learn the diabetic-related phrases in the language of the foreign land, all the better.
