Make Travel a Way of Life With These Jobs
Everyone has a friend who seems to have traveled everywhere. It’s a mystery how they live a lifestyle that supports such amazing adventures and worldwide jet setting. However, there are way and jobs that not only support a lifestyle of travel, but encourage it. Here are some practical methods if travel is a lifestyle you seek.
WWOOF
No, this job doesn’t concern dogs. WWOOF stands for the World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms. It is a work exchange program in which you work on a farm for room and board. Every WWOOF experience is different, so you should narrow down what you want from this adventure before you take the plunge. Ask yourself some questions:
- Are you interested or capable of manual labor on a farm?
- Are you interested in farm stands, working with the soil or working with animals?
- Do you have allergies that may limit your involvement?
- Can you see yourself sleeping in a tent for a couple weeks or even longer?
If you positively answer these questions and are still set on this course of action, identify the skills you have that would be helpful on a farm. This doesn’t only mean working the dirt, either. Many farmers need marketing help as well as IT gurus. Once you know what skills you have, look around for opportunities in countries you find interesting.
Teach
Exotic destinations like Thailand, Vietnam and China are all hotbeds for ESL teachers. Not only do ESL teachers make good money, but they are given enough time off to spend it. You need at least a bachelor’s degree, a TEFL Certificate (which can be attained through an online class) and a lot of patience for paper work. Many schools don’t require prior experience and pay for at least one way of airfare as well as your apartment while you are employed. On your days off and vacation time, you’ll have the means to travel in country and out, as ESL teachers are paid well in relation to living costs.
Contract Work
Manufacturers, IT firms and a host of other industries offer contract work. If you have an area of expertise, look for contract work that can take you around the world. For instance, global companies such as Amway, Amazon and Facebook offer contracts that can span many projects and last years.
Earn While You Travel
Not everyone wants the tether of a job, even if it’s a contractual one. If this sounds like you, aim for destinations that are known for their inexpensive goods, food and rooms. Identify jobs you can do while mobile. With Google AdSense, many travel bloggers make extra income with their photography and writing. AdSense lets businesses post relevant ads on your blog, which is then converted into a per-click profit. If you just started a blog, you’re reader base probably isn’t large enough to fund your lifestyle, but with time, many bloggers have garnered a vast readership that keeps them on the path less traveled rather than in an office.
I know folks who are happily living and teaching English in Japan. A good way to experience life in another place.
THis might be good for a young, single person. They could see how others live in different parts of the country or world but I would be very careful.
I don’t think I have ever heard of things like this because if I did, I would be traveling right now. I do hope many
people take advantage of these..
@tisonlyme143
I had never heard of most of these. WWOOF sounds nice for those who enjoy outdoor work.
These jobs that require travel are more difficult with a family because many times the kids will not want to move from place to place.
