Tips for Exploring and Enjoying Your Own City
If you have wanderlust, and cannot wait to get out of your hometown and jet off to a new country, you need to first consider why. Is it because you are truly bored with home? Is it because you are running from something? Is it because you don’t think your home city or town have enough to offer? The fact of the matter is that life is what you make of it. If you find your home boring it might not be because there is little to do, but because you haven’t found out what you can do yet. Seeing a new place is exciting, but it won’t beat intimately getting to know a city. It also won’t beat being able to make new friends and relationships that you can actually further and nurture. That’s why you need to explore and enjoy your own city, and to do that, you need to follow these tips:
- Sign Up to Local Social Media Accounts
Local businesses want to be discovered, and local news is the best place to find it. If you live in a city, this means there are a lot of neighborhoods to discover. To find out what’s going on, you’ll need to subscribe or follow these local accounts. The more specific, the better. You can find pretty places to go to on Instagram, special deals, offers, and openings on Twitter, and everything on Facebook. There are also apps that can help you find cool things to do in your city. The more accounts and apps you use, the better.
- Use the Explore Feature
When you want to find out about what is happening in a city, the best thing to do sometimes is to search through it. Snapchat and Instagram have location-specific features that allow you to see what’s going on in your city. You can see local updates from small restaurants, to a snippet of a cool event you had no idea was on. The stories feature on these accounts is how you can discover great events, but the photos that are taken are how you will find great sights.
- Read Up Online
If you want a more in-depth understanding of your city and what is going on, you’ll have to read up. From newspapers to blogs, there are stories to be had. You can learn about the history of one pub, find hidden locations, and so on. This is how you’ll find the hidden gems, because the authors on these blogs put effort into finding them, instead of spending a few minutes to take a photo and go.
- Go on Walks
The best way to explore a city of any kind is to walk it. You should, of course, ensure that you are safe wherever you go, but walking can help you get to know your way around, can help you find your own hidden gems, and so on. Walk the city, and you’ll know it. As a bonus, you’ll also get your exercise in! It’s a great way to feel great and satisfy your wanderlust.
- Take Photos
Whether you are going on a walk or going out, bring a camera with you. For most, this means the phone in your pocket. The point, however, is to put an emphasis on looking at your surroundings and finding the beauty wherever you are and taking beautiful photos of it. The more effort you put into finding the beauty, even in an area you didn’t like initially, the more you’ll love and appreciate every neighborhood you go to.
- Galleries
Local artists are the lifeblood of a neighborhood, which is why going to galleries and exhibitions is a great way to get your culture fix. From big galleries and museums to small corner galleries that only hold a few items at a time. Exhibitions, in particular, are great public artworks that are meant to be enjoyed by all, and can make the city feel alive – if you would go and see them for yourself.
- Eclectic Nights Out
As time goes on, an increasing amount of adult nights have increased over time. You are no longer restricted to drinking and dancing. Now there are as many fun things to do for adults as there are for children. One of the best experiences that has exploded in popularity around the world are Room Escape experiences, where you and your friends try and solve clues together to escape the room in under an hour.
- Openings
Restaurant openings, movie premieres, gallery openings and more – cities are never still, and something is always starting. These opening events can offer great deals or fun parties, which is why keeping an ear out for openings in your city can be a great way to spend the night. Openings can be found through a variety of means, but keeping an eye on local social media accounts is a good start.
- Take Classes
Artisans in your city offer classes all the time, which is why if you want a great experience, you should take one. Not only will you learn something new, you’ll also support the local talent, furthering the development and culture of your city. Find these classes online, through local search, or when you go on your walks.
- Word of Mouth
Last but not least, listen. Not everyone who has been to an amazing bar or restaurant puts it on social media. Instead, you need to hear about it in person. In turn, tell others about the secrets of the city. That way you can bring more business to your favorite haunts, and you can discover new secrets daily.
Your home is exciting. It is full of new experiences and new things to see and do. There are people to meet, friendships to make, and even a special someone around the corner. Exploring and discovering your own city is the best way to feel at home. It is the best way to feel everyday excitement. It is how you can have an adventure, without costing you a thing in many cases. So save your wanderlust for your hometown, and explore it with the same voracity you would a new city in a new country.

Some cities it seems there is much to do, others maybe not so much. I look not only online, but at the newspaper. One oher way to explore AND help is to consider volunteering. Its amazing how nice it is to do so, and you meet all kinds of interesting people you might not have met!
Thank your! It’s so easy to get caught up with what’s out there, that you forget about what is right in front of you.
There are things to do in my town, but it is very pricey, mostly restaurants. I do go for walks where there are sidewalks and enough people around it is fairly safe.
Lots of great ideas here! Sometimes staycations are necessary so might as well make the most of it!
