Traveling is exciting but it can be pretty stressful. There are many things that you have to plan and the last thing you want to see is being faced with luggage that is lost. One of the big problems that often appears is not taking into account the fact that something bad can happen with travel luggage. We are used to protecting our vehicles with something like the Good Sam extended service plan and we know that we have to take our medication with us but do we know how to choose great travel luggage? Here are some tips to help you make the best possible choice.

Backpack Or Suitcase?

This is the very first thing that you want to think about. Generally, backpacks are great when you need a lot of mobility but most travelers need suitcases. This is because:

  • Convenience – as you move through the airports and you have to deal with much foot traffic, large weight luggage on your back will be difficult.
  • Wheels – most suitcases now have wheels, allowing easier maneuverability.
  • Organization – you do not have the same level of organization leeway in your backpack over the suitcase.
  • Appearance – if you care about how you look, the backpack will never be considered.

Soft Or Hard?

Travel luggage has to be chosen based on traveling needs. As an example, do you travel for fun or for business? Do you want to carry some items that can easily break? In this case you need harder carry-ons that can protect your camera and other fragile items. The hard casing offers that extra needed protection.

If you need extra storage and this is the main thing for you, soft luggage is normally better. The bags can easily expand so you can easily carry a lot more than what you initially think.

Size

You should never take travel luggage with you if the size is larger than what you actually need or what you can easily lift. Obviously, you will want to think about how long the vacation will be. There are people that easily have a great time with fewer items but some do need much more than others.

Be sure that you take into account travel luggage size requirements, especially when you travel by plane. These requirements wildly vary from one air travel company to the next.

Appearance

After you think about all the facts that were mentioned above, it is time to think about appearance. If you can buy travel luggage that looks great, why not take that into account? You can choose out of numerous colors these days and patterns vary a lot from one manufacturer to the next. The internet can easily help you to find numerous design patterns to choose from. You obviously want to find something that matches your personality but be sure you do not sacrifice functionality. At the end of the day, the most important thing is to be sure travel luggage is safe and protects what is inside. Sacrificing appearance is not a bad idea when this is possible.

  • Thank you for the information. When I travel, I travel as light as possible.

  • If I were flying, my main concern would be finding luggage that can withstand possible mishandling. I think it pays to buy the sturdiest luggage you can afford.

  • Great tips and looking forward to using them for our upcoming trip to NYC.

  • Sounds good. I was shopping for luggage, and then realized I didn’t know what to forget, so I didn’t get anything. I still need it, so now I feel more knowledgeable about selecting something good for me. Thank you!

  • I have a larger suitcase for longer trips and it’s a soft sided one that expands. It has really come in handy for when I’ve needed the extra space.
