Working from home can be a huge benefit. You get to work in your own environment, set your own hours, dress how you like, eat what you want, and still bring in the results your boss knows you for.

However, some people don’t quite get the flexibility they deserve from their current job. That’s why thinking about taking on a remote role is a good idea. If you want to work from home in the near future, you might need to realign your career and find yourself a new job.

But what work from home role would suit you? And do you want to go totally remote, or still have a meeting place you can go to once or twice a month? These are the first two things to consider before thinking about changing and refining your resume.

Graphic Designer

If you’ve got artistic skills, you could become a graphic designer straight from home or on the go. Buy a tablet, download some digital drawing software, and create your own banners, logos, backgrounds, webpage concepts, and larger images.

In the US, graphic designers can expect to make around $30 an hour, depending on the client and length of the project. But overall, the more work you do, the higher your income threshold is going to be, even if you take on various part time jobs rather than one salaried position.

Freelance Writer

Freelance writing is the bread and butter of the working from home world. It’s a very versatile position that allows you to take on a variety of niche work. And if you’ve ever enjoyed crafting a narrative or being creative with non fiction, writing as a freelancer could be perfect for you.

The written word is the core of all online content. It’s the number one way to communicate, and any and all companies out there are going to need website copy and/or blog content. Even in terms of social media, a freelance writer’s skills will still be needed, as they capture a brand’s voice better than anyone else.

IT Assistant

If you’ve got a background in computing and/or coding, you can very easily become a virtual IT assistant. If not, but one of your hobbies is to build websites, look into websites such as https://www.asditacademy.com/cyber-security-degree-in-maryland to gain a formal qualification you can put on your resume and go from there.

If you interview for a permanent position, you could end up making an average of $30,000 a year straight from a home setting. If you’d rather freelance, this rate could vary but tends to be higher.

Data Entry

Data entry jobs require you to be attentive to detail, be able to work one to one with customers, and have a strong sense of patience. If this sounds like skills under your belt, you could net a position as a virtual data entry clerk.

This would mean you work flexible hours entering data into company software, ensuring digital data is complete and up to date, and that you can provide customer details whenever they’re needed. Sound like a job that’s in your wheelhouse? You could make upwards of $30,000 per year.

Social Media Manager

This is something you could do solely or on the side as a freelance writer. Social media management requires you to have your finger on the pulse 24/7, knowing what a company’s audience both want and need from the business they’re following.

You need to have ideas about what to do next, as well as help a company use their marketing budget efficiently. Social media is the most accessible place on earth, and knowing the way it moves is a valuable thing in the digital era.

Personal Trainer

A more involved work from home position, becoming a PT is good for anyone who likes interaction. If you’ve got a history working in health and wellbeing, and you’re physically fit, you could easily transition into offering personal training services.

This would allow you to work from either your own home or a client’s home, so make sure you’ve got some reliable transport as well!

Working from home in a role that really suits you can be liberating. You get more time out of your day, you can play to your own skills and passions, and you can make money wherever you go. If it’s a career move you’ve been thinking about for a while, now could be the time to jump in!
