CBD Oil and Pets: The Amazing Benefits for Your Cat or Dog
CBD has taken over the world. From beauty products to specialty drinks, this liquid gold is truly magical. While this life-changing herb has benefitted millions of people all over the globe, CBD has been proven to help animals as well. That’s right, our four-legged pals can actually live longer, more active lives when given CBD derived products.
Before you ask how this miracle product can help your pups and kittens, let’s first go over some of the basics of CBD. This will give you a better understanding of its plentiful benefits. After you learn more about CBD and how it works for pets, you can make the personal decision about incorporating it into your pet’s lifestyle to increase your furry friends’ quality and enjoyment of life.
What is CBD?
Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past year, you likely know that CBD is a non-psychoactive derivative of the hemp plant. The extraction process is similar to lavender and grape seed oil. Farmers who create this product typically eliminate all strains of THC, (the stuff that gets you high) and leaves the medicinal, calming effects of CBD. Thus, the cannabidiol is formed.
People can transform CBD into virtually anything. From treats to beauty products, the sky’s the limit. When vets gave the okay for pets to indulge in the CBD goodness, the pet world went crazy. There’s treats, shampoos and dog food made entirely of CBD extracts.
CBD comes in many forms and flavors. Not that your pet is picky by any means; however, some CBD oil has an earthy flavor that may be odd to your pet. If they don’t react to the herb initially, give it time! There are also creative ways you can incorporate CBD into their diet without them having to eat the pure extract. You can check them out here. As mentioned, there are hundreds of products on the market that can fit the needs of your pet.
It’s Saved the Lives of So Many Animals Already
There are touching stories of animals who were on their last leg; struggling with cancer and heart problems. Vets and owners were close to giving up. That is until they began incorporating CBD into their diet. CBD works with the endocannabinoid system; a complex area of the body that controls memory, emotional regulation, and sleep. When a person or animal takes CBD, the receptors from the herb regulate inflamed areas of the body. This makes it an ideal treatment option for pets who deal with chronic pain.
Many pets who suffer from cancer enjoy a speedy recovery after implementing CBD into their diet. Dogs, specifically of the Bully breed, are prone to joint and back pain. Owners who incorporate CBD oil into their pet’s diet find that their pup is able to move about without complications. This makes it an ideal option for holistic treatment.
Is CBD Safe?
Yes! CBD is a non-pharmaceutical option for your pet. It gives off the same effects as lavender or sage oil. However, it’s always suggested to consult with your vet prior to giving your pet CBD. Although there aren’t any known cases of overdose or adverse effects, it’s wise to let your vet know of any changes you make to your pet’s diet. So, now that you know a bit about this miraculous product, let’s see how it can specifically benefit your pet.
Pain Management
As mentioned, CBD helps to calm down inflamed areas of the body. Animals who have injuries or chronic illnesses benefit greatly from CBD products. By implementing this tasty infused treat into their diet, pets are able to manage their pain without being strung out on prescription medication. This is an ideal option for dogs and horses as they are constantly performing in some manner.
Anticonvulsant
If your pet suffers from chronic seizures, CBD can help get those scary convulsions under control. Naturally, the hemp plant relaxes the body. Therefore, the extracts are designed to calm the muscles and naturally relax the body. CBD treats may serve as a complete replacement to their medicinal routine. As always, consult with your vet before pulling your pet off of any prescribed medication.
Anti-inflammatory
Some pets deal with irritating skin issues that leave their little bodies covered in scabs. No doubt this can be frustrating to a pet who can’t reach his ears or tail. CBD topical creams are great to use for calming redness and inflammation of the skin. In addition, older pets who deal with joint pain can benefit from CBD treats or topical ointments. This natural supplement is like grease to an old wheel. It can give your pet its vitality back; something I’m sure you miss seeing.
Antiemetic
Does your pet get car sick during long trips? If so, CBD may help alleviate that nausea and help them get through the trip. This may even assist with food sensitivities. Just like humans, animals can get an upset stomach when they eat foods that don’t agree with them. CBD treats may be just the cure they need to relieve some stomach pain.
Anti-Anxiety
Just like in humans, CBD works to alleviate symptoms of anxiety. If you have an anxious pet, it’s best to introduce CBD into their diet quickly. This is an ideal option for pets who have separation anxiety. Just give them a quick CBD treat and they’ll be happy campers while you’re away at work.
Regulates Mood and Increases Balance
If your pet seems to be a bit mood…ahem, calling all cats…CBD may improve their overall demeanor. CBD emphasizes homeostasis in the body. When the body is balanced, so is the mind. Your pet will experience an overall healthy disposition and seem genuinely happy. CBD is an excellent herb that can extend and improve the quality of your pet’s life. As always, check with your vet before you incorporate CBD into your pet’s diet. While there are no adverse side-effects reported, some pets who are currently taking medication for pre-existing issues may not react well to this herbal introduction.
Here is another great source of information.
This was pin worthy!! I wanted to share to pass the word around faster! I couldn’t stand for my furry friends to have one ounce of pain if they don’t have to be!! I wish I knew about this when I was giving my honey bunny dog pills for his hips! I would have rathered have given him something natural like the CBD oil!! Thank you so much for sharing this information!
I would never have thought to use it with my pet, but it sounds like a great idea! I wish I had something like that for my old doggie during holidays especially. She was very afraid of the fireworks and I wonder if that would have helped with her anxiety.
I love CBD. I use it daily to treat my anxiety and for my psoriatic arthritis in place of the meds that made me worse when taking them. I would 100% use it for pets as well.
This is so interested. I have known friends who take CBD for ADD and cancer. I never thought of giving it to an pet. It’s amazing what a little oil can do.
