If you are planning to move to the UK from America or another country and Salford University is on your list of potential institutions to study at, getting a good feel and idea of what the university and the campus is like might be a little hard if you’ve been unable to visit. Thankfully, we’ve put together a guide to starting a Salford University as an international student to help you out in your first week.

Be Careful with Paperwork

In your first week you’ll need to register at the university and ensure that all of your documentation is up to date, along with any funding documentation. If you are on a student visa you’ll need to make sure that this is updated and accepted also. International students can face penalties or even lose their student visa if they don’t attend classes, so it’s important to keep this in mind for future attendance.

Getting Involved

Your first week at Salford University will be one that’s full of different activities to do, and you should try to get involved with as many of them as you can in order to get your most from the university and make new friends. During the welcome week you’ll be able to visit the student union bar where most nights there will be something going on, from parties to comedy nights or whatever else takes your fancy. There’s also the option to join clubs, societies, and sporting groups, so if you’re into something such as radio at home or play hockey, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t be able to carry it on at uni – just visit the sports hall on the designated day.

Travelling and Moving In

If you have a long way to travel, the best advice is to travel light. The student accommodation provided by Salford University and the various options for private accommodation all provide the major furniture items, and you can also buy bedding and other home essentials when you’re there – there are shops in town, at the Salford Shopping Centre, and a huge Tesco supermarket that’s open 24 hours a day. If you have items that you simply can’t part with, you might want to consider sending them first and having them put in a Salford storage facility where you can pick them up when you arrive. This is also a great idea for those looking to travel back home during the holidays as well.

If You Need Help

One of the best things about Salford University is that it’s a really supportive institution. If you’ve got a problem it’s not very difficult to find somebody to help, whether it’s a lecturer, seminar leader, a friendly member of the IT helpdesk or even another student. There are a number of student-run support groups that you may find helpful, and tutors are usually just an e-mail away, so there’s really no need to worry if you get stuck.

All the best for your journey! We hope you enjoy studying at the University of Salford!
