I must admit, I am completely a visual person. I have always been told I use gestures and my hands a lot when telling a story or talking to someone. Guess that means I am pretty expressive, right?
In today’s world of easy access to most anything using the internet, studies have shown that 60% of people retain more information when a visual involved, including photos and videos.
According to an Ohio State University study, the average person is confronted with 5,000 visual messages daily. I can truly relate to this. From riding the city bus to work, to playing a game on my smartphone, I constantly see visuals for advertisements, services, goods and other visual material.
My children are the same way, and in today’s world, I believe they retain more with things like tablets, smartphones and laptops giving them access to a virtual world full of information right at their fingertips.
My child’s school is no longer teaching cursive writing to children because of the advance in technology. I disagree with this. I believe that traditional interaction is important with everyone. According to a 2005 study from Stanford University, spending more time on technology can lead to the restriction social interaction. While there is no right or wrong way answer, it is important to find a healthy balance to help you retain more information. Whether you are a visual person or a person who can read a lot and retain, find a what works best for you to keep your mind sharp and enable you to retain more of what you see, touch, read and engage in.
