An appetite for love  ~My “The Hundred Foot Journey” Review

On a recent press trip to LA, I had the opportunity to attend a private screening of DreamWorks “The Hundred Foot Journey” starring Helen Mirren (The Queen) & Manish Dayal (90210). Produced by Steven Spielberg & Oprah Winfrey and directed by Lasse Hallstrom, THE HUNDRED FOOT JOURNEY is a heartwarming movie that shares the story of love, laughter, tragedy and more, all through the art of cooking.

More about the movie:

In “The Hundred-Foot Journey,” Hassan Kadam (Manish Dayal) is a culinary ingénue with the gastronomic equivalent of perfect pitch. Displaced from their native India, the Kadam family, led by Papa (Om Puri), settles in the quaint village of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val in the south of France. Filled with charm, it is both picturesque and elegant – the ideal place to settle down and open an Indian restaurant, Maison Mumbai. That is, until the chilly chef proprietress of Le Saule Pleureur, a Michelin-starred, classical French restaurant run by Madame Mallory (Academy Award®-winner Helen Mirren) gets wind of it. Her icy protests against the new Indian restaurant a hundred feet from her own escalate into a heated battle between the two establishments until Hassan’s passion for French haute cuisine — and for Madame Mallory’s enchanting sous chef, Marguerite (Charlotte Le Bon) — combine with his mysteriously-delicious talent to weave magic between their two cultures and imbue Saint-Antonin with the flavors of life that even Madame Mallory cannot ignore. At first Madame Mallory’s culinary rival, she eventually recognizes Hassan’s gift as a chef and takes him under her wing.

The chemistry between Madame Mallory and Papa becomes obvious within the first few scenes together.

Manish Dayal gives an awe-inspiring performance as the member of the Kadam family who will take the talents, taught to him by his mother, to new heights.  The film starts as Hassan shows his natural taste for finer foods at a very young age.  Upon the death of their mother and wife, the Kadam family moves from Mumbai to London (near an airport) and finally settles in a small village in the South of France.

As the Kadam family journeys through France in search of a new home, the family”s car brake lines fail, causing them to become stranded on the side of the road. Hassan and his family meet a young woman, Marguerite (Charlotte Le Bon) who is  kind enough to help them tow their vehicle into the small village.  As the weather takes a turn and it begins to rain, Maguerite takes the family in for a some warmth and food.  This young lady turns out to be a chef at what will become the Kadam family’s rivaling restaurant, Le Saule Pleureur and its owner Madame Mallory.

Helen Mirren gives a wonderful performance as a hard-nosed business woman with a rough exterior, but deep down, she has a true heart of gold and shows this as she realizes that Hassan is truly a gifted, natural chef.

As Hassan (Manish Dayal) helps his family build a worthwhile restaurant, the movies gives many comedic moments with Hassan’s papa (Om Puri) and Madame Mallory.  I particularly loved the attention to detail that the directors gave into the story of Hassan’s natural ability to blend and fuse species, meats and other elements together to create the perfect dish, whether it is from his native Indian background, or that of his new home filled with French cuisines.

Hoping to take her restaurant to the next critically acclaimed rating, Madame Mallory agrees to mentor young Hassan.  Along the way, she learns more about herself and who she really is.

Through his gift, some teaching from Marguerite and family support, Hassan’s journey shows the transformation of a young, naive man with a natural gift, evolving into an Master Chef that travels to the capital city and becomes and renowned chef.

“The Hundred Foot Journey” is a movie that can fill the appetite of all hearts and the minds.  With a classic love story, a bit of diabolical scheming and a surprise twist in the end, this  movie is something that you should experience in the theater.
