Technologies That Change the Face of Hurricane Response

Hurricanes are powerful storms that can bring high winds, heavy rainfall, and coastal flooding. These storms can often be life-threatening and potentially cause massive amounts of property damage. What are some ways that science and technology are working together to be able to predict the path of a hurricane, the potential force it will bring, and the ability for communities and first responders to communicate?

Hurricane Tracking Technology

Before the invention of modern hurricane tracking systems, hurricanes killed thousands of people. Today, with modern and innovative technology, more and more lives are being spared.

One of the primary ways that hurricanes are tracked today is through specialized planes developed by NASA’s Hurricane Hunters. Aircraft are flown into the storm to gather as much data as possible. This can help predict the potential path a hurricane might take, as well as how powerful it will be. Weather satellites can snap images that can track temperatures, rain amounts, and wind speeds.

Drone technology has advanced rapidly and is extremely helpful in flying into areas that have been ravaged by storms. Drones can send back real-time data that is vital for first responders.

Communication

Social media is a quick way for people to communicate during a hurricane. As emergency response teams become overwhelmed with 911 calls, many go to social media channels for fast information exchange. Individuals, families, and even whole communities can ask for help via social media platforms. Responders can use this information for a quick response time.

Waze is a free community-based GPS app that reports road conditions and traffic situations. This app can help responders learn which roads may be closed and impassable, as well as finding routes that are open.

Zello is an app that serves as a type of walkie-talkie for your smartphone. This free app is a great way for families and first responders to stay connected. CrowdSource Rescue is a public platform that uses advanced technology to connect first responders, civilian volunteers, and people in need.

Get a Plan

If you live in a hurricane-prone area, it is vital that you and your family have a preparedness plan. Always make sure and have a survival bag ready. Include medications, identification, food, water, and first aid supplies. In your home, have enough food and water to last at least three days, and don’t forget to have plenty of pet food. Have a survival kit in your vehicle as well.

A generator is vital for creating your own electricity. With a generator, you will be able to charge cell phones and tablets. Keep a hand crank radio on hand to stay up-to-date with local news.

Post-Hurricane

When it is safe to go outside, be very careful! There could be downed power lines that are still active. Debris can be hidden under murky water that could be harmful. Take photos of damage to send to your insurance company. As soon as you can, communicate with loved ones that you are okay.

When a hurricane makes landfall, the repercussions can be immense. However, with advanced technology, forecasters are better able to predict when and where the storm may hit, and innovations in app development help with communication. Make a plan, be prepared, and keep your family safe.
